Our Story
Squelankyl was founded in 2009 with a simple mission: to make the ancient art of clay modeling accessible to everyone. What started as a small studio in O'Reillyville has grown into Canada's premier destination for clay modeling education.
Our founder, Sarah Mitchell, discovered her passion for clay modeling during her travels through traditional pottery villages in Asia. Inspired by the centuries-old techniques she witnessed, she returned to Canada with a vision to create a space where these timeless skills could be shared and preserved.
Our Mission
We believe that working with clay is more than just an artistic pursuit—it's a meditative practice that connects us to our heritage and helps us find peace in our busy modern lives. Our workshops are designed to:
- Preserve traditional clay modeling techniques
- Foster creativity and artistic expression
- Provide a peaceful, supportive learning environment
- Build a community of clay enthusiasts
- Support local artisans and craftspeople
Our Approach
At Squelankyl, we combine traditional hand-building techniques with modern approaches to clay work. Our instructors are not just teachers—they're practicing artists who bring real-world experience to every workshop.
We maintain small class sizes to ensure personalized attention, and our studio is equipped with professional-grade tools and kilns. Whether you're taking your first clay class or you're an experienced potter looking to refine your skills, you'll find the resources and support you need to succeed.
Sustainability Commitment
We're committed to environmentally responsible practices. We use locally sourced clay whenever possible, recycle clay scraps, and employ energy-efficient kilns. Our glazes are lead-free and environmentally safe.
